EfferSan Uses in Zoos and Aquariums

Today, more than ever, zoological facilities must address the risks and exposure presented by a variety of diseases. Measures can range from vaccination programs to antibiotics to surface contact disinfectants. It is important to realize that whether you vaccinate or not, animals may become infected. In the case of zoo animals, especially when endangered species are involved, our attitude should be to do everything to save these animals, stated by Willem Schaftenaar, Zoo Veterinarian, Rotterdam Zoo, and chairman of the Veterinary Advisory Group of the Dutch Federation.

A few common sense approaches can help reduce risks associated with harmful pathogens. Practicing good bio-security routinely can reduce transmission in our zoos. Treating contact surfaces plays a major role in effective bio-security programs.

EfferSan solution, basin, sprayers and scrub brushes should be ready at all entrances where animals are housed. Keep EfferSan solutions clean and replenished according to product guidelines. Attention signs should be posted and enforced to keep visitors from entering buildings where animals are quarantined and also in birthing areas. Have only one area designated as the entrance and exit where disinfection of vehicle tires, equipment, footwear, etc., should take place. Wear gloves when handling or treating an animal to prevent transmission. Increase vermin control measures to prevent internal and external spread.

When disinfecting facilities, pay particular attention to corners, cracks, seams and porous surfaces, e.g., wood and concrete where dirt accumulates. Remove (scrape) all fecal matter, soiled bedding, and unused feed from the area that is to be cleaned. Proper containment/disposal is important.

Visitors to the zoo should disinfect footwear, car tires, truck beds, and equipment before entering the premises. Persons having been exposed to known contamination or areas of high risk should avoid non-essential visits and only after full clothing and equipment are thoroughly disinfected.

Food should be left in cars and not brought into the zoo. Before transporting animals into the zoos, they should be routinely checked for symptoms, tested for diseases and quarantined as suggested by your veterinarian. A critical bio-security step is to ensure all new animals are quarantined and tested before introducing to their new environment.
